A U.S. government dentist in Phoenix has been stripped of patient privileges while investigators probe allegations that he sold the extracted teeth of his Native American clients.
Sanders Steinman was put on desk duty at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center after hospital administrators say he was found shipping teeth to an unidentified European institution.
"There might be some explanation that is legitimate," said Alan Croft, medical center public information officer.
"I would not rule out that the teeth were used for educational purposes."
But Indian leaders said they are deeply concerned by the allegations and the impact it could have on the medical center, which provides health care for Native Americans in Arizona and parts of Nevada, California and Utah.
