Josef Koudelka [1938 – Present] is a Czech-born French photographer renowned for his impactful and emotive imagery, particularly in the realms of exile, displacement, and the human condition.
Initially trained as an engineer, Koudelka turned to photography in the 1960s, gaining international acclaim for his documentation of the Soviet invasion of Prague in 1968.
His powerful images from this period were published anonymously in the West to protect him and his family from retaliation, earning him the Robert Capa Gold Medal.
Koudelka’s work is characterized by its stark, compelling composition and its profound sense of timelessness and dislocation, themes that are explored deeply in his later projects such as “Gypsies” and “Exiles.”
